You order a pair of pants online on a Sunday evening, the size doesn’t fit, and by Monday morning you’re looking for a way to contact the store. The contact form is nowhere to be found, the chat isn’t responding, and the phone number leads to a voicemail.

This scenario is something most online clothing shoppers have experienced at least once. Contacting a fashion store’s customer service shouldn’t feel like an obstacle course, but several concrete barriers complicate the process.

Digital Accessibility of Fashion Stores: What Changes in Practice

Since June 28, 2025, the European Accessibility Act requires e-commerce sites to make their assistance, identification, and payment functions accessible to people with disabilities. In practical terms, an online clothing store must offer a contact form that can be used via keyboard, is compatible with screen readers, and provides at least one alternative channel (phone or message) when the digital journey encounters issues.

Microservice businesses are exempt under certain conditions, but medium or large fashion brands are not. The DGCCRF can initiate checks on contact and ordering processes, especially after a report. Non-compliance may lead to financial penalties.

You can access the Fashion Collection site to see what a well-structured contact page with clearly identified channels looks like.

This regulatory framework encourages stores to rethink their customer journey. A form that is theoretically available but inaccessible via keyboard or incompatible with a screen reader is no longer sufficient. The stakes are not just legal: a poorly designed contact page loses customers long before a check occurs.

Finding the Right Contact Channel for Your Issue

Not all requests deserve the same channel. A return of ill-fitting clothing, a pending refund, or a question about the composition of a fabric do not require the same response or timeframe.

Return or Exchange of Clothing

For a return, you save time by going directly through the customer area of the online store rather than the generic contact form. Most fashion brands offer a “return this item” button in the order history. The integrated return tracking avoids unnecessary back-and-forth with customer service.

If the store does not offer this option, a structured email with the order number, item reference, and a photo of any defect speeds up processing. Return policies vary on this point among brands: some respond within 24 hours, while others take several days.

Question About a Product or Size

Live chat, when available, remains the fastest channel for a simple question about the availability of a size or the material of a garment. On the mobile apps of some stores, the chat is accessible directly from the product page itself.

When chat is not available, social media (Instagram or Facebook) often work better than one might think. Fashion stores pay attention to their image on these platforms and generally respond faster on social media than via email.

Complaint or Dispute

For a formal complaint (refused refund, item never received), prefer email or registered mail. These channels leave a written record that can be used in case of mediation. A message on social media does not constitute admissible evidence in a commercial dispute.

Errors That Lengthen Response Times

We observe the same counterproductive reflexes among many buyers who contact an online fashion store. A few simple adjustments can radically change processing times.

  • Sending a message without an order number: customer service then has to contact you to obtain this information, which doubles the minimum response time.
  • Using multiple channels simultaneously (email, chat, phone, and social media) for the same request: this creates duplicates in the ticketing system and slows down the processing of all requests in the queue.
  • Writing a message that is too vague (“I have a problem with my order”) instead of specifying the exact nature of the issue, the item concerned, and the expected outcome (exchange, refund, information).
  • Ignoring the FAQ or help center: the majority of questions about returns and delivery already have answers there, without waiting for an advisor to be available.

Contact Page Unavailable: Where to Look When Nothing is Visible

Some online fashion stores intentionally bury their contact page. It can sometimes only be found in the footer, or behind a “help” link that leads to a FAQ without a way to reach a human. This is not by chance: reducing the volume of incoming contacts lowers support costs.

When the contact page remains elusive on a brand’s website, several avenues work:

  • Type the name of the store followed by “contact” or “customer service” directly into a search engine. The Google result often displays the direct page, even if it is poorly indexed in the site’s navigation.
  • Check the legal notices or general terms of sale: the email address and sometimes the phone number must be included for any business selling online in France.
  • Consult the store’s mobile app, which sometimes offers more direct access to support than the browser version of the site.

Since the implementation of the European Accessibility Act, retail websites must specify their level of compliance regarding accessibility and provide an alternative contact method when the standard digital journey does not work. If a store does not offer any accessible channel, it is grounds for reporting to the DGCCRF.

The customer experience in online fashion is as much about the quality of after-sales service as it is about the clothing catalog. A store with customer service that is easy to reach, responsive, and structured by channel turns a failed purchase into customer loyalty. Those that hide their contact page end up losing far more than the cost of an additional advisor.
